Flute Alliance is comprised of long-time music professionals.
Denise Westby, founder, brings together
musicians and educators who desire to share their knowledge with flutists of all ages. Although most activities are
designed around flutists, there are also other general music opportunities for those interested in developing their knowledge
of music.

Denise Westby grew up knowing that
flute was her "thing" from the age of 11. A member of the earliest Metropolitan Youth Symphony as well as
the Portland Youth Philharmonic, she received her initial training from John May of the Oregon Symphony and then went
on to attend the University of Oregon School of Music. She is the adjunct flute instructor at Linfield College, has a home
studio in Tigard, and is the Principal Flute with Sinfonia Concertante Orchestra and 5tet, WW quintet. She is the founder
and administrator of Flute Alliance.
Dr. Sydney Carlson joined the faculty of Portland
State University in 2008. She is a member of the Portland Opera Orchestra and has performed internationally in recital.
She holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music, East Carolina University, and the University of Houston. We are
thrilled to have her join the Flute Alliance staff! Welcome, Sydney!
Denise, Carla, and Sydney are private instructors, teaching students of
all ages and levels. The Flute Alliance are proud members of the American Federation of Musicians, Local #99 and the
